Crafty Woggles ~ Fun, creative, and imaginative!

OK . . . so you don't have the skills required to "whip out" once of those fancy carved neckerchief slides. No fear! There are plenty of cool slides you can make that will look just as spiffy on that necker.

These crafty slides make great presents too! Have a birthday party coming up? Tired of spending a ton of money on overpriced Lego sets and projectile shooting weapons? Afraid your son's present won't be the coolest at the party (something you're sure to hear about later)? Try making one of these slides. The gift will surely be a hit.

Here are some fun craft slides I've crafted with my Den. They're pretty simple to make (the boys all made their own) and a lot of fun to wear.

A simple refrigerator magnet made for this cool Pinewood Derby slide. We hot glued a thin strip of rubber to the back to hold the slide in place.

A cool slide we made from a computer PC board. We were working on our Computer Belt Loop and completely dismantled an old 286 machine. We cut the PCB using tin snips, glued on parts, and hot glued PVC pipe onto the back for the necker.

We poured plater of paris into Looney Tunes candy molds, inserted a thin slice of PVC pipe, painted and varnished them. Taz was definatey the favorite, although Daffy was close behind.
Two of the many slides we've made using Sculpty modeling clay. The stuff comes in a ton of colors and bakes quickly in the oven. I made these snakes from assorted leftover clay, bakes, then painted with standard hobby paint. I sprayed on 2 coats of craft varnish to protect the finish.

Simple slides I painted using basic craft paints. I found the precut figures at a local craft store. I cut two holes in the front and inserted a 12 inch piece of leather rope to secure the slide to my neckerchief. The beads keep the rope from slipping out of the slide.

To secure the slide, I hold it in place against my neckerchief tails and tie 1/2 of a knot behind the tails. The tighter the better for this first 1/2 of the knot. The pinching of the tails and the grip of the leather rope keep the slide in place. I tie the second 1/2 of the knot a little looser so I can untie it later.

Kate Smith sent in these great suggestions for simple slides:

My son, his Webelos Den, and I have made some great woggles with Sculpey III colored modeling compound. I'm trying to convince my son that his next woggle should be a Sculptey gameboy. I may do it, even if he doesn't!

Some additional woggles can be found at the World Scout Shop web site (www.worldscoutshop.org) - the copper scarf woggle from the World Scout Jamboree in Chile is really neat, but is not available in the US. I asked via e-mail, and it is only available from the web site (and the minimum order is on the order of $250 US). Even though it is not readily available, it's shape, and the similar triangular shape of the leather woggle (also from the Jamboree) can be used for clay, leather, or wood woggles.

Here are some cool craft slides sent in by some of our visitors. There are even more on our other crafty pages. You can never have too many neckerchief slides! They make for great incentive prizes as well.

A number of you have mentioned this simple square knot. Simply dye cotton rope in appropriate colors, tie the knot, and use a little glue to hold it together. Attach a loop and you're set! If you're using nylon rope, you'll need to melt the rope ends a bit to prevent fraying.

This fun plastic turtle slide was sent in by Phil G in New York. You could use just about any animal or bug. Those oversized flies, spiders, and lizards would look cool.

Here's a picture of the official woggle of the 1995 World Scout Jamboree. This is a great idea, and can be easily reproduced if you can find a little wooden shoe. Try that Scandinavian shop on the corner, the one that sells that tasty pickled herring. Drill a hole in the heel and one in the ball of the foot. Decorate as desired!
